Re: Fantasy v. Science Fiction
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 2:59 PMI loath fantasy.
I have never read anything in the genre that was worth the paper.
Most the writers I've seen in the genre are semi literate morons who should be writing formula crap for Harlequin.

Thu, February 12, 2009 - 4:55 PMCliff... Tolkein? James Branch Cabell? Neil Gaiman? Give 'em a chance. There are crappy writers in every genre... and usually a few amazing ones. I'm mostly a science fiction fan, but am often appalled by some of the newer mass market stuff. Nonetheless, I'm always reassured by Neal Stephenson, Gene Wolfe, Bruce Sterling, William Gibson... -

Re: Fantasy v. Science Fiction
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 5:26 PMPatricia McKillip is another fine fantasy writer. Andre Norton. Marion Zimmer Bradley. Terry Pratchett. Charles DeLint.
I sound like an old fogy, but I do get tired of the new "urban fantasy". When I was growing up, Gaiman and DeLint wrote what was called then "urban fantasy". These days "urban fantasy" is Laurell K. Hamilton and others who write female protagonists who use the supernatural to fight bad guys and there's usually some sex or romance involved. And the more sex, the more it's likely to be called "paranormal romance." And while I see that these two genres are enjoyed by many, I get pretty bored by a steady diet of them myself. I don't get bored by -- and am actually inspired by -- a steady diet of Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Stephen Donaldson, DeLint, McKillip. Etc. And I get pissed off by this whole new industry of fantasy romance that seems to have taken over. -

Re: Fantasy v. Science Fiction
Sun, April 12, 2009 - 3:27 PMCliff, didn't I just read you telling someone off for doing what you are doing here? Something about rats and mice?
When I have nothing informative to write, I don't. Calling any form of writer a "semi literate moron" is not nice. That kind of language should be referred to footballers. If you don't have time for fantasy, then leave the tribe.
