Winter Workout

G'day,

I'm doing a slush reading marathon. You're invited. It's called the Winter Workout, the link for the place to respond is at the bottom. Or you an send me a message through Tribe's message service.

Cheers,

How it works:
Everyone who sends me a science fiction, fantasy, or urban fantasy novel between 10pm ET on February 4th, and 8am ET on February 6th will get at least one full chapter (up to fifty pages) read and critiqued by me. Many, will get theirs back the same day. To do this I will be reading for twenty four straight hours. My goal is to pass the mark i made last year which was 19 first chapters and critiques. To do this, if I am still reading after one chapter or fifty pages I will send the writer an email that says "Still Reading after one." or something similar.

Last time i picked up two clients out of this, and have one more resubmission in my inbox waiting to be read.

Writers should note that I use the same four part critique form for everyone. The sections are: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, and The Rest.

Everyone should add my domain to their spam filters immediately. When you submit you will get an auto-response telling you it has been received. Anyone who does not follow the submission guidelines on my website will be rejected without being read. www.Onyxhawke.com

Notes:
If i get the same size response or larger as last year, I will not get to everyone on that Wednesday. I will still read everything. Everyone who has submitted things to the regular submission inbox will be read between now and 2/6. My replies may start very soon after midnight as I read and type pretty quickly.

Most importantly: go spread the word, the more submissions i get, the happier I'll be.

Edit: the email address for submissions for the Winter Workout is: ww@Onyxhawke.com

A question for the SF people....

I'm more of a Fantasy person myself, there isn't much Sci/Fi that I like.... But i was looking at an article that mentioned subgenres within genres. One of the things that it mentions is "cyberpunk" as a genre. I've seen this in movies and anime of course, but what kind of cyberpunk literature exists out there? I'm interested in reading it.

A question on folk tales

If anyone here is a fan of folk tales, (as am I!) i was wondering if you have heard this one before, (or another like it, in another culture.)

I heard it a long time ago, and this is the best i can remember it.

In a Native American tale, there is an old woman who is knitting a blanket and cooking a stew. The story goes, that if she ever finishes the making the blanket, the world will end. Every once in a while, she gets up to stir the pot of stew. While she is doing that, her dog, who sits by at all times, gets up and begins to unravel the blanket, completely undoing the work she just did.

Terry Pratchett did a version of this tale in one of his Wee Free Men books in which once a year, a raven flies to the end of the earth and sharpens his beak on a mountain, if the mountain is worn down to a grain of sand, then the world will end.

Anyone heard of these kinds of tales before?

If it weren't for the creative guys at Tactical Studies Rules (TSR) I doubt we'd have the extensive fantasy- and mythology-based literature and games which are so popular and financially successful today.

Job Postings

So, I've been trying to sign up at different places to get free lance work. None of it has panned out yet, but I am getting entertained by all the job listings where they say "I have a great idea for a novel but I can't write it. I am looking for someone else to do it. Already have idea. Should be easy."

Ha.

Here's one listing that's a case in point:

<<I am looking for a writer to pen my Sci-fi epic!!! Due to the secretive nature of the story line I will tell you it after I've read a sample of your work, and we meet in person. The story is very unique, and dear to my heart. I just don't have the talent to take on such a tail without destroying or simplifying my vision. The writer I am looking for is fun, Sci-fi saavy, smart, and easy going. To save alot of time and talk, You would be doing this project on SPEC. My lawyers have a deal memo already in place for the two books (It is a two book series), you wouldn't be a ghost writer. There is a potential first look deal at Random house, with definite publishablility. If you love the story and agree to the deal, then a novel we will have. Thank you for taking a chance.>>

At least it's entertaining. .....

I was at the WBZ studio in Boston for my first appearance on the Jordan Rich Show in October 2002. At that time Jordan invited me back when I had a book published -- so, here I am! The second volume in my series is due out later this year.

So I'm new to writing, it's not what I get paid to do and I'm sure that's the same for many of you. Thing is, I joined this tribe because I am currently writing a book...possibly a series of books, not sure how far I want to take the story yet. Are any of you in the same boat? Does anyone have suggestions for a new writer?

I'm not sure who might be interested but I thought I'd post this anyway!

www.fmwriters.com is a great site. If you're looking for some help getting a novel started then the owner is starting a great class that starts the frist of Jan. It's 2 years long, an assignment a week, but it's great for anyone looking to give their writing an extra jump. I've taken the class two times.

tell us if you decide to join up! I talked myself into signing up again! (now to find an idea.... hmmm)

http://www.fmwriters.com/community/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=17&topic_id=74222&mesg_id=74222&page=

You will have to join fmwriters.com to post and join the class.

Book contract signed (really, this has been an extraordinary week!)

I've just signed a contract with Aisling Press for Appetite, the second volume in my Deviations series. (The first volume, Covenant, is available at http://www.aislingpress.com and elsewhere. I've got vendor links up at http://home.earthlink.net/~emalcohn/deviations.html .)

And I've made arrangements to be on the Jordan Rich Show (WBZ Newsradio 1030 Boston) on Saturday, February 2, 2008. The show will focus on fiction authors and will run from midnight to 5 AM Eastern time. We plan to do an interview by phone around 12:30, and will firm up details as we get closer to the air date. The show is broadcast nationwide and is accessible on the Web at
http://www.wbz.com/pages/6202.php

I was a guest on Jordan's show in October 2002 (I lived in Boston then, so was over at the studio), and we spent a great hour talking about science fiction with each other and with listeners who called in. Afterwards, he invited me back when I had a book published.

Here I am... :-)

I've been writing fantasy for about 9 years now. I haven't gotten anything published yet, but working on editing. It's great to see a group that catters to the fantasy/sci fi genre!

My story "Prometheus Rebound" has just been accepted to Helix: A Speculative Fiction Quarterly. I don't know which issue it will be in, but it will be available for free perusal when it goes live. I'll post a link when it's up.

That now makes four stories forthcoming, joining "Identity Theft" in The Drabbler #10, "Hermit Crabs" in Electric Velocipede #14, and "Arachne" in Riffing on Strings: Creative Writing Inspired by String Theory (Scriblerus Press, June 08). "Arachne" will be a reprint, having originally appeared in Aboriginal Science Fiction's Nov./Dec. 1988 issue.

If shameless self-promotion is permissible, I have a couple of books recently published:

Speculative Japan: Outstanding Tales of Japanese Science Fiction & Fantasy (Kurodahan Press)
Edited by Gene van Troyer Grania Davis
http://www.kurodahan.com/e/catalog/titles/j0021.html

Features 14 stories and one long poem. This book attempted to complete the work that Judith Merril started with Japanese SF many years ago, and many of the translations are collaborations between her and several Japanese translators. Several have never before been published in English.

Collaborations: A Collection of Collaborative Poetry
Edited by Gene van Troyer
http://www.ravennapress.com/books

All of the poems in this book were coauthored by two or more poets. While not specifically genre SF as a whole, many of the poems are overtly so. Featured poets are Ray Bradbury, Tom Disch, Bruce Boston, Robert A. Frazier, Marilyn Hacker, Gene van Troyer, and many others.

Seattle, WA – Aeon Speculative Fiction, the quarterly electronic magazine now in its fourth year of publication, announced today that it will double its pay rate with issue Thirteen, raising it from three to six cents per word.

“We’re thrilled to be able to give our authors a better deal,” said Bridget McKenna, Aeon co-editor. “And so far, they don’t seem to mind, either.” Authors with stories already contracted for issues Thirteen and beyond will receive revised contracts reflecting the pay increase.

Aeon Twelve is due out on November 30, and features stories by Dev Agarwal, Sarah L. Edwards, John Kratman, David D. Levine, Lisa Mantchev, Lawrence M. Schoen, and Katherine Sparrow, poetry by Bruce Boston, and columns by Dr. Rob Furey and Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

Aeon Speculative Fiction, along with The Internet Review of Science Fiction, is published by Quintamid, LLC, with offices in Seattle’s Pioneer Square district. Aeon is edited by Bridget McKenna and Marti McKenna.

TriggerStreet.com now accepting short stories and novels

Up until recently, TriggerStreet was accepting only short films and screenplays. Since then, they've added plays and now short stories and books to their site.

From their e-mail to me:
"Since its inception, TriggerStreet.com has been the place to go if you wanted to find exposure and feedback for your Screenplays and Short Films online. Now, in addition to being able to upload your Short Stories to the site, a section we launched earlier this year, you can now also upload Books that you have written."

Normally a member must submit a couple of reviews of others' work before submitting their own, but there is currently a "free" period (meaning no previous review is needed) for short story and book uploads.

Creative Commons has a post that pretty much encapsulates what TriggerStreet is about, at
http://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/4419

I haven't used the site, myself, but I became interested in it after seeing Kevin Spacey (who founded it) interviewed on the Charlie Rose PBS show a while back.

I haven't actually SUBMITTED fiction in years...been too busy with college, and writing and publishing essays...but I did it...I sent off two stories a while back. Got the first one back today. Rejected...but the editor included a few brief comments, which was nice.

*whine, snivel*

ok, I'm done now, hee hee. Added it to the old pile. There's still the other one. And the one after that, and the one after that... Just had to share. :-D

Acceptance to String Theory Anthology

My story "Arachne," originally published in Aboriginal Science Fiction (November-December 1988), has been accepted for reprinting in the String Theory Anthology forthcoming from Scriblerus Press, the publishing arm of the Banyan Institute.

http://www.banyancollege.org/scriblerus/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=6&Itemid=35

Wrote editor Sean Miller:

"I'd love to discuss with you what it is about your piece that we appreciate so much, and I'm hoping that as we approach publication, we'll have the chance to do so. But for now, due to time constraints, we can only offer you this somewhat generic approbation and welcome."

Grinnnnnnnn.

The anthology is scheduled to go to press in May 2008. My blog entry "Weaving Without a Loom" ( http://hurricanecountry.blogspot.com/2005/07/weaving-without-loom.html ) describes my process of writing that story (the photo of the spider up top is before my "good camera" days).

Hi everyone,

I have recently published a novel about a pantheon of gods (fictional of course) who have caused one of the worst droughts in history and who are subsequently made to come to the earth... It is a humorous and irreverent tale. If anyone out there thinks they may be interested in reading it, please let me know. I'm looking for reviewers and would be happy to send you a copy if you think it may be your kind of thing.

There are more details on my website www.lisaselvidge.com

Thanks,
Lisa

Anyone going to Necronomicon in Tampa this weekend?

I'll be on a dark poetry panel Saturday morning and will also be publicizing my novel Deviations: Covenant.

I'll have advance copies there (which I haven't seen yet). Covenant is available for pre-order at discount from Aisling Press -- http://www.aislingpress.com -- and is now also listed on Barnes & Noble. Street release is scheduled for November 28.

Back in the 80s my story "Lazuli" (Asimov's, Nov. '84) got me on the final ballot for the 1985 John W. Campbell Award for best new sf writer of the year, and "Moments of Clarity" (the first Full Spectrum anthology, Bantam Books, 1988) reached preliminary ballot for a Nebula Award, given by the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America.

Covenant is my first published novel (I started trying to sell novel-length work more than 30 years ago), so "excited" doesn't begin to describe how I feel right now. :)

I've also got a few local bookstore and library events planned, and I'll be at the St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading at the end of the month.

Hello, I'm new here and have two questions :)

I joined Tribe and this group awhile ago, but I guess I haven't got around to posting. I'm a flaky lurker, but I'll try to visit as much as possible.

I am a writer of many things, but my main thing right now is a fantasy series of which I am so very proud. I've written a lot of things, but this series is the only thing I can say I'm -proud- of and believe will be published. I'm not saying it just because I'm writing it :) But I've been having a hard time working on it due to bouts of depression.

I have two questions:

1. Are you proud of anything you write? Why or why not?

2. For those with depression issues (on a serious level, or otherwise), are you able to write during these times? If not, have you found any way to get around it? Prescriptions, anything?

Please excuse anything that might not be clear or too random... vicodin is kicking in...

I posted this in the WRiting Fiction tribe as well. I've received good advice from both forums on writing and getting my work out there, the submission process, etc. I didn't always listen to that advice and had to learn it the hard way, but I did hear that advice here. Now I hear myself giving that same advice to other writers and shaking my head at some their naive assumptions, but they were the same naive assumptions I had.

Thanks for your help and patience.

Robert A. Heinlein's Legacy
By TAYLOR DINERMAN
July 26, 2007; Page D7

Science fiction at one time was despised as vulgar and "populist" by university English departments. Today, it is just another cultural artifact to be deconstructed, along with cartoons and People magazine articles. Yet one could argue that science fiction has had a greater impact on the way we all live than any other literary genre of the 20th century.
[Robert A. Heinlein]

When one looks at the great technological revolutions that have shaped our lives over the past 50 years, more often than not one finds that the men and women behind them were avid consumers of what used to be considered no more than adolescent trash. As Arthur C. Clarke put it: "Almost every good scientist I know has read science fiction." And the greatest writer who produced them was Robert Anson Heinlein, born in Butler, Mo., 100 years ago this month.

The list of technologies, concepts and events that he anticipated in his fiction is long and varied. In his 1951 juvenile novel, "Between Planets," he described cellphones. In 1940, even before the Manhattan Project had begun, he chronicled, in the short story "Blowups Happen," the destruction of a graphite-regulated nuclear reactor similar to the one at Chernobyl. And in his 1961 masterpiece, "Stranger in a Strange Land," Heinlein -- decades before Ronald and Nancy Reagan moved to the White House -- introduced the idea that a president's wife might try to guide his actions based on the advice of her astrologer. One of Heinlein's best known "inventions" is the water bed, though he never took out a patent.

Heinlein brought to his work a unique combination of technical savvy -- based largely on the engineering training he'd received at the U.S. Naval Academy and a career in the Navy cut short by tuberculosis in 1934 -- and a broad knowledge of history and foreign languages. Bemoaning the state of U.S. education in the 1970s, he wrote that "the three-legged stool of understanding is held up by history, languages and mathematics . . . if you lack any one of them you are just another ignorant peasant with dung on your boots." Heinlein was certainly no ignorant peasant.

Though he later became well known for his anticommunism, Heinlein in the late 1930s indulged in both leftist and isolationist politics. He sold his first science-fiction story in 1939 for $70, "and there was never a chance that I would ever again look for honest work." After Pearl Harbor, to his great disappointment, he was not called back into uniformed service. He ended the war at the Philadelphia Naval Aircraft Factory, working with fellow writers L. Sprague de Camp and Isaac Asimov.

From the late '40s to the late '50s, Heinlein mostly wrote adventure stories aimed at boys. Some, such as "Citizen of the Galaxy" (1957) and "Starman Jones" (1953), examine social and economic status with as jaundiced an eye as Tom Wolfe's. Others are comedies like the delightful "The Rolling Stones" (1952), which helped inspire the famous Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles."

In 1958, in response to what he saw as a liberal effort to weaken America's military, he set aside the "Sex and God" book on which he had been working and wrote "Starship Troopers." This was probably his most controversial book. In it he imagines a future society in which the right to vote must be earned by volunteering for service, including service in the military. In response to claims that the book glorifies the military, he wrote: "It does indeed. Specifically, the P.B.I., the Poor Bloody Infantry, the mudfoot who puts his frail body between his loved home and the war's desolation -- but is rarely appreciated."

Afterward, he finished the work he had set aside, and it became his second and possibly greatest masterpiece, "Stranger in a Strange Land." The book tells the story of a human child raised by Martians who is brought to Earth and discovers religion, lust and love, as well as politics, interplanetary diplomacy, legal shenanigans and life in a traveling carnival. The novel introduced the word "grok" into the vocabulary of the 1960s counterculture and seduced many of its members into reading some of Heinlein's other works -- writings that, in some cases, helped them to rethink the assumptions of hippiedom.

His next book was "Glory Road," another novel on the subject of duty, heroism and love. The first chapter not only sets up the story but includes one of the most eloquent and witty denunciations of military conscription ever written. In "Glory Road," his protagonist is magically transported from Earth, where he had been fighting "pragmatic Marxists in the jungle," to a fantasy universe where, armed only with sword and bow, he would rescue a priceless treasure. His guide and mentor is a woman of "ageless perfect beauty" who later turns out to be the Empress of the Twenty Universes. She explains to the hero that "so far as I know, your culture is the only semicivilized one in which love is not recognized as the highest art and given the serious study it deserves."

Heinlein's political beliefs were moving more and more toward the libertarian side of the spectrum. He supported Barry Goldwater in 1964, and in 1966 he published what many considered his greatest book, "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress," the tale of how penal colonists and their descendants on the Moon successfully revolt against their Earthly masters. The core of this book, which keeps it near the top of the libertarians' reading lists, is the speech by an old professor, Bernardo de la Paz, to the rebels' constitutional convention: "...like fire and fusion, government is a dangerous servant and a terrible master. You now have your freedom -- if you can keep it. But do remember that you can lose this freedom more quickly to yourselves than to any other tyrant."

The professor explains: "The power to tax, once conceded, has no limits; it contains until it destroys. I was not joking when I told them to dig into their own pouches. It may not be possible to do away with government -- sometimes I think that it is an inescapable disease of human beings. But it may be possible to keep it small and starved and inoffensive -- and can you think of a better way than by requiring the governors themselves to pay the costs of their antisocial hobby." As they say on the Moon, "TANSTAAFL!": "There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch!"

Heinlein's later novels were overshadowed by his failing health, and he often wrote on medical themes such as brain transplants and cloning. He was a strong supporter of blood drives and a big supporter of NASA's medical research projects. In the '70s, in a speech to the midshipmen at the Naval Academy, he said he thought that "patriotism has lost its grip on a large percentage of our population. . . . But there is no way to force patriotism on anyone. Passing a law will not create it, nor can we buy it by appropriating so many billions of dollars."

Robert A. Heinlein, who died in 1988, lived a life inspired by two great loves. One was America and its promise of freedom. As one of his characters put it: "Your country has a system free enough to let heroes work at their trade. It should last a long time -- unless its looseness is destroyed from the inside." And he loved and admired women -- not just his wife, Virginia, who provided the model for the many strong-minded and highly competent females who populate his stories, but all of womankind. "Some people disparage the female form divine, sex is too good for them; they should have been oysters."

In another hundred years, it will be interesting to see if the nuclear-powered spaceships and other technological marvels he predicted are with us. But nothing in his legacy will be more important than the spirit of liberty he championed and his belief that "this hairless embryo with the aching oversized brain case and the opposable thumb, this animal barely up from the apes will endure. Will endure and spread out to the stars and beyond, carrying with him his honesty and his insatiable curiosity, his unlimited courage and his noble essential decency."

Creating character

So I am starting to brainstorm a sci fi idea I have. I have had the overarching plot in my head for quite awhile. I am currently fleshing out smaller plots, taking notes, making outlines, and writing up small vignettes of story. I have even started a website blog to try out that type of organization. I am thinking it would be good to submit a chapter as a short story to a sci fi contest for amatures. That is something new for me. To find information on writing I have come to tribe to find some new friends and support. I started joining groups.

What I found the other day was an intersting link to the "guidelines for submission" from an Isaac Asimov publication. In it they point out that they are looking for character oriented material - note: that is in my words, not their's. So, the thing that came up for me was: I have always had ideas about plot, character abilities, and plot climax. Only recently have I started "seeing" my characters as I outline plots and ideas.

As I seriously started putting pen to paper, I picked up a few books about writing. One on punctuation, one on organization, and one on writing techniques. They have provided good ideas for organizing and what makes good characters, but I wonder what you might recommend to "develop a satisfying character"? Got a favorite method? Would you share?

I put a link to my writing in my profile. Feedback is always welcome.

Just had a poem accepted to Asimov's

I got the good news via email yesterday. Asimov's has a poetry backlog, so it may be some time before the piece appears. But it will be my second poem in there, following my first one back in 1983 ("Wings," mid-Dec., reprinted in the anthology Burning With A Vision (Robert Frazier, Ed., Owlswick Press, 1984) & the 1984 Rhysling Anthology (Science Fiction Poetry Association), which contains nominees for the best sf/f poetry of the year). Asimov's also published two stories of mine, one in '84 ("Lazuli," Nov., which got me on the final ballot for the John W. Campbell Award) and one in '86 ("The S.O.B. Show," Dec., a spoof of the planetarium field, in which I did volunteer work for 5 years. The title, in which S.O.B. stands for Star of Bethlehem, is trade slang for the Christmas show).

It's good to be back! :D

I have a story that I have been wanting to finish for a whole year. I am totally stuck and figure since it is fantasy related, maybe someone could give me an idea how to complete this or at least help me get back on track. Is that kind of post appropriate here?

What do you do when you've redone and polished a piece so many times that you can no longer stand back from the story. You know it by heart so that in the final rewrite you miss your mistakes because you glaze right over them, even if they're totally obvious.
I know another person's opinion is most often suggested, but I've had 3 and each agree it flows well till the last chapter where I lost something but for the life of us, we can't put our finger on it.

first 100 pages

Well last night it finally happened. I hit the 100 page mark!
Wait, maybe I should give a little more background before I continue. I am writing my first fantasy book. I have written lots of children's stories for various course work and for my daughter and nieces. This is different, now that I am finally done with school, I have the time to put in some real effort into my writing. I started this book late last year after being inspired by a multide of things including a dream and the fact that I had time to read for enjoyment again. I read a really great book followed by a really awful book. That was when I decided it was time to put some of my ideas together and start writing a book I could call my own.
Now back to the present...
Last night I finally hit the 100 page mark, a personal goal I set for myself. While working this weekend, I have mapped out another minor plot twist, how to work up to the major crescendo, as well as the ending. I am very pleased with my book so far.=) I hope others can enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it. The characters have grown and adapted well to the minor trials and tribulations. I have tried to pour in the sensory details so that the reader can experience the story as it unfolds. Now that I am working towards an end, I guess I need to decide what to do with it when I am done.
I know this post is mostly rambling but I just needed to share. Thanks for listening.

FOR the German monk searching for signs of God in "Star Trek," the obscure storeroom on the fourth floor of UC Riverside's main library was worth the trans-Atlantic pilgrimage.

Bernhard Janzen pored over television scripts and a video clip from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and noticed how an African American space station captain had found a religious stone tablet and, much like Moses, smashed it on the ground as he shepherded an oppressed people toward freedom.

The scene was central to Janzen's dissertation about religious symbolism in the space-age television series.

The monk is among a new breed of scholars flocking to UC Riverside for otherworldly research.

UC Berkeley has the world's premiere collection on Mark Twain — and Yale an unmatched trove of rare medieval manuscripts. But for research on Capt. Kirk, Frankenstein or Harry Potter, nothing tops the 110,000-volume Eaton collection at UC Riverside, the world's largest library of science fiction, fantasy and horror books.

"It's like going to Graceland if you're an Elvis fan," said Drew Morse, a creative writing professor who made the pilgrimage to Riverside from Ohio last summer to study rare poetry by "Fahrenheit 451" author Ray Bradbury.

As appreciation for the literary qualities of science fiction has grown in recent years, the UC Riverside collection has emerged from an academic ghetto. No institution had ever stockpiled science fiction like this, or subjected itself to such an internal clash over the worth of the genre.

Even public libraries had considered the books disposable literature, mainly because early science fiction was published almost exclusively in paperback. But a handful of professors and a librarian at UC Riverside saw something else, and started building.

IN 1969, English professor Robert Gleckner helped the school acquire 7,500 rare science fiction, fantasy and horror novels from an eccentric Bay Area physician, J. Lloyd Eaton. Among them was a first edition of Bram Stoker's "Dracula." Eaton had scribbled plot summaries and succinct criticisms of nearly every book on faded sheets of letterhead.

But Gleckner's colleagues mocked the collection, and he banished the volumes to a storeroom and never touched them again.

And for 10 years, no one paid the books any attention — until UC Riverside's head librarian, Eleanor Montague, found them and cracked open a few. She and comparative literature scholar George Slusser began cooking up an improbable scheme: Science fiction, for all its talk of wormholes and galaxies far, far away was a form of 20th-century American literature that someone ought to keep as a cultural archive.

So in 1979, Montague dubbed Slusser the Eaton collection's first curator.

When he broke the news to friends, they shook their heads and warned him it would be career suicide.

"They told me 'You'd better not touch that, you'll never get tenured,' " Slusser said. "I said 'Hell, I'm going to do it anyway.' "

Slusser went by instinct and started scooping up every new science fiction novel that came out. With less than $10,000 to work with, he handed hundred-dollar bills to foreign graduate students so they could cart back sci-fi from Russia, Brazil, China and other worldly locales.

Slusser haunted used-book stores and estate sales on his own time. His best finds came from reclusive packrats who had refused to toss their paperbacks. One collector had drained his pool and turned it into underground storage for thousands of science fiction magazines and fan newsletters, including issues of "Amazing Stories," a 1920s-era pamphlet regarded as the world's first science fiction magazine.

All the while, fellow faculty tried to torpedo Slusser's efforts.

English professors went after his funding, arguing to library administrators and English department heads that hoarding collectible James Joyce titles was more important than any featuring Frodo Baggins, Slusser said.

Other professors snickered at him in campus hallways. They even grilled his students during departmental exams: Why not study something more meaningful like feminism or multiculturalism?

"It was guerrilla warfare," Slusser said.

Slusser did win a faculty ally, Jean-Pierre Barricelli, who helped him put on an academic conference in 1979 about science fiction. But their dealings had to be done in secret — "under the counter," Slusser said. About 70 scholars showed up.

Years later, Barricelli became one of Slusser's greatest supporters during his bid for tenure. Barricelli, a scholar on Dante and Leopardi who taught comparative literature, died in 1997.

The conference became an annual event. Attending academics published their papers and helped graduate students win fellowships to pay for their studies at the Eaton collection.

They sponsored a Finnish cosmologist who charted visions of the universe from Dante to the 21st century. An MIT scholar pondered whether comic-book architecture inspired the look of modern cities.

And Janzen, the Capuchin monk from Germany, compared "Star Trek" story lines with modern history and the Bible. The United Federation of Planets, Janzen said, represented an idealized U.S.

"I'm not going to Star Trek conventions and I don't have a Star Trek uniform in my closet, but I'm very interested in concepts of scientific progress and how that affects our day-to-day life and how that changes our notions of being human," said Janzen, 45, who earned his doctorate at UC Riverside in June 2006. "I think science fiction is that genre that deals with those questions."

As word spread about the conferences and the research being done by Slusser's students, more people showed up. Some years, the conferences drew 200 scholars. Slusser's legion of faithful followers were mostly closeted sci-fi fans.

One was Paul Alkon, 71, who bottled up a secret passion for science fiction as a graduate student in Chicago in 1960. He became an expert on 18th-century British writers Samuel Johnson and Daniel Defoe. But once Alkon earned tenure at USC, he started work on a long-anticipated project: a treatise on the origins of futuristic fiction. His book required several research trips to the Eaton collection.

"It's a high-quality collection," Alkon said. "It covers so completely what was written — the bad stuff and the good stuff. You get a picture of what America was like in the 20th century in books."

Slusser dreamed of opening a science fiction studies center and graduate program at the university. In 1982, he sold the idea to then-Chancellor Tomas Rivera, who pledged money and his support. But when Rivera died of a heart attack, plans for the center fizzled. One after the other, Rivera's successors all said the same thing: There wasn't enough money.

Ten years passed, and a battle-weary Slusser grew bitter and depressed. Even Slusser's original ally, the library, eventually turned its back on him, he said. New leadership grew tired of being the sole sponsor behind Slusser's science fiction conferences and cut his funding in 1999. Only the community of sci-fi fans kept them going, cobbling together the $5,000 Slusser needed for the conference.

To scholars like Alkon and others who had led academic double lives for so long, Slusser was their hero.

"All those years, George was the one-man show that kept the whole thing going — the conferences and the collection," Alkon said.

Even UC Riverside astrophysicists and biologists reached out to Slusser to lend moral support. Many owed their interest in science to futuristic stories they read as children.

Meanwhile, outside the university, something bigger was happening. The entertainment industry began cashing in on science fiction, which had struck a chord with the moviegoing public.

Many of the highest-grossing films of the last 30 years featured science fiction themes: "The Terminator," "Star Wars," "The Matrix."

Recent high-profile Hollywood films, such as "Déjà Vu" and "I, Robot," lifted their story lines from Philip K. Dick and Isaac Asimov, respectively. The "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter" movies spawned cult followings.

The same academicians who thumbed their noses at science fiction began designing classes with titles such as "The Philosophy of The Matrix" or the "The Science of Superheroes."

Within the literary establishment, professional organizations dedicated to the academic study of scientific and fantastic literature sprung to life, while a handful of critical literary journals discussed major works and trends. Scholars now convene regularly at academic conferences — gatherings far more serious than the often satirized fan conventions that attract costume-garbed aficionados.

"It's come of age," said Rosemary G. Feal, executive director of the Modern Language Assn. of America, a professional group for language and literature scholars.

In 2004, the association's flagship journal and one of the most prestigious publications in literary studies, PLMA, published an issue that discussed science fiction exclusively.

Science fiction "is sort of at the edge of being canonized," said Georg Gugelberger, 66, UC Riverside professor emeritus of comparative literature. "I'm not the biggest fan. But it's significant. There are people who want to study it, and they should be allowed to."

There's been a change at UC Riverside, too. Six years ago the school hired a new director of special collections, Melissa Conway, who started spending more than half her $40,000 budget on science fiction acquisitions.

The English department succumbed to "Harry Potter" mania, holding a symposium in 2005. Fans garbed in pointy hats and capes munched on chocolate frogs while listening to professors debate disability and discrimination between non-magical muggles and wizards.

STILL, nearly 30 years of fighting with administrators as well as his own department took its toll on Slusser. He'd done double duty as Eaton collection curator and professor, teaching a full schedule of comparative literature classes and advising doctoral theses.

He retired in 2005 to work on several long-anticipated books about science fiction.

"I just ran out of steam," he said.

The library is still searching for a new curator.

But there's talk about starting the nation's first doctoral program in science fiction studies — and bringing Slusser, now 67, out of retirement to help build it.

He still can't quite believe the change in attitude at the university. When the library invited Slusser back in February to give a lecture about utopian societies in science fiction, they welcomed him with a big cake.

Finally, he said, his colleagues know they have a treasure in the Eaton collection, "and they're going to do something with it."

My short story "Hermit Crabs" has just been accepted over at Electric Velocipede "for publication in a future issue."
Wrote editor John Klima in his e-mail, "I'm blown away."
Grinnn.

I don't know yet when publication will actually occur, but I'll pipe up when it does. I learned about EV through Lisa Mantchev, who has an excellent story forthcoming there. (I was lucky enough to read her draft.)

Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber

I just got done re-reading the full two Chronicles yet again, and somebody please tell me why he didn't finish his series properly? His final two books in the 2nd series read like deus ex machina. The final book itself left so-o-o-o many things up in the air/unresolved, and back when it'd originally come out, I'd waited with baited breath for years for him to finish the series, only to find out later that that *was* his final Amber book. Then he died (jeez, the nerve of some people).

Does anyone know if he'd planned a last book? Corwin himself in the final few sentences says that there are "still mysteries within mysteries". I do not mind when plot devices are left hanging; I don't need everything handed to me on a silver platter. But that's stylistic, and his Amber writings weren't along those lines. He made it a point to bring dangling plot threads together, even if it took several books, but the final book wasn't like that at all. In fact, it'd introduced new complications that needed sorting out.

Perhaps he left writings around about it. You never know: just look at Tolkien's "The Children of Hurin". That was started in 1918 and was the work of J.R.R.'s son for the last 30 years: "Christopher Tolkien has painstakingly edited together the complete work from his father’s many drafts, and this book is the culmination of a tireless thirty-year endeavour by him to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s vast body of unpublished work to a wide audience." Why couldn't the same be done with Roger's Chronicles of Amber, if unfinished bits and pieces are lying about?

A little experiment

It's official. I've completely lost my mind. Okay, okay so I actually was born without one (Thanks Mom!), but this is proof I need a bit of help. I've decided to do two experiments at once. One, is to see how much slush I can go through in one twenty four hour period without killing myself or running away from this business entirely. And Two, to see how far and wide the internet can carry this in just a few days.

So, on Monday May 28th 2007 I will be read as much slush as I can. In order to make this effective, I'll need much more slush. Right now, I just don't have enough to make this part entertaining for me. So, if you have something to submit, send it, if you know someone else who has something, make them send it. The email address will go active sometime Friday the 24th during the day. And stay open until about 8 am on May 28th. Each submission will get an auto response from my website; keep this as your receipt.

As enticement, every single submission received during this period is guaranteed to get at least one chapter read and critiqued. If, and only if it follows the complete submission guidelines as described on my website; http://www.onyxhawke.com , and isn't bad enough to make Baby Cthulhu cry.

How it works:

You send.
I read.
In the pursuit of fairness, if after chapter one I am still interested in reading more I will send you an email that will say, "Still reading after one, final decision later" or something similar.

Obviously, if this gets a big response I will not get to everyone Monday, but each qualified submission will still get the one chapter critique, minimum. If you decide you'd rather use the normal submission box, please put "MM-Tribe" as the code at the end of subject line.

Either way, good luck and in honor of my obvious love of pain, I've dubbed this little experiment "Masochism Monday"

Masochism Monday submission box: (mm@onyxhawke.com)

Mike

*****

Edit Begins:

Well, apparently i can't read a calender when its after midnight the above inbox does indeed go active on Friday morning and will stay open until Monday morning, but to accommodate travelers, on Thursday the 24th it will go active for about two hours starting at 7:30am ET.

International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day

Thanks to Lisa Mantchev ( http://lisamantchev.com/ ) for alerting me to International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day.
According to its originator and host Jo Walton ("Bluejo"), IPSTD is, "the day when pixel-stained technopeasants everywhere are stretching and smiling and putting down their technotools to celebrate their existence by releasing their works into the wild, or at least the web."
Bluejo hosts IPSTD over at:
http://papersky.livejournal.com/
and was responding to this post on the SFWA page at Live Journal:
http://community.livejournal.com/sfwa/10039.html
Since I already have a couple of stories up on my webpage, I added my link to the growing list.
My sampler (found at http://home.earthlink.net/~emalcohn/fiction.html ) contains two of my 1980s publications. "Cog" (second one down, but I list it first here because IPSTD focuses mainly on science fiction and fantasy) appeared in _Tales of the Unanticipated_, Fall/Winter 1988. "Variations for Four Hands" appeared in the erotica journal _Yellow Silk_, No. 14, Spring 1985.

Anti-heroes

There are several degrees and permutations of anti-heroes, ranging from villains to off-beat, not by-the-book archetypes. I find one type particularly fascinating: the one who saves the day, doesn't want too--resists doing so--but recognizes that there is no one else to do the job. Can anyone recommend stories centered around such a character?

holy war

I think the following would make for intriguing portrayal in speculative fiction. Anyone want to collaborate?

I am trying to find the words and concepts to explain what? Theorizing which is mine, even if independently arrived at elsewhere, with prongs into different forks on the crossroads of mind and matter:

Mind wandering during tv news reports Iraq, Afghanistan, Al Qaeda, Saddam, Osama, lies, oil, land, Mecca, Islam, Armageddon, cradle of civilization, Yahweh, Roman Empire, Constantine, Crusades, conspiracy, high crimes, multi-level realities, Neocons, Iran/Contra,

Is the so-called Bush Administration in league with Osama for mutual benefit in the here and hereafter? The stated goal of 9/11 from Osama's viewpoint was getting the infidel US out of sacred Saudi Arabia. The long-term goal of the Neocons is US world domination, on the way to which is acquisition of Middle Eastern oil for political/economic leverage. Saddam's interest was domination of the Middle East, bringing those countries together under his rule, keeping domination over Middle Eastern oil in the hands of his people for their own building of wealth and power. His goals were opposed to the Islamic fundamentalist groups that want Islamic control of the region. Lots of history having to do with Western colonization of the Middle East and what was wrought along the way, but stemming from back before the Crusades, a theme of religious hellraising to veil the political/economic domination goals. So, Neocon interests could hook up with Al Qaeda interests to lead to 9/11's wonderful excuse for invading Afghanistan and mucking things up enough to create a lot of potential soldiers for Allah. Hide-and-seek games with Osama just games. He gets to send out threatening communiqués at the convenience of Bush Admin. political gains. In all the confusion, the lies to move the war into Iraq get better play. US leaves Saudi Arabia, destroys Saddam, incites civil war based on old ethnic disputes in the country Britain cobbled together in their infinite colonial arrogance. In such confusion there are opportunities for those who keep their heads, because they are pulling the strings. And so on.

But even further, into another realm of thought: After Constantine decided his best political move would be to convert to Christianity, he had Venus' Temple in Jerusalem destroyed to find Christian relics. Those who have studied the Gods must know that Venus, far from sweetness and light, can be quite jealously arrogant and dangerous. No doubt blaming Yahweh for the thoughtless actions of his tribes against her glory, she would be happy to keep conflagrations burning between those tribes until she is appeased. Goddess worship was superseded by arrogant Yahweh's one god policy. Powerful goddess energy suppressed has been sneaking out into human emotional motivation. Subverted energy so often comes out rather more evil-like than not.

But there's so much going on. The fundamentalist Christians are awaiting Armageddon, the Rapture, the Judgment, when they will be bodily lifted into grace, into the raptures of Heaven, with or without virgin servants. I think Angels are said to have no sex organs, so perhaps they are considered perennial virgins. There are clues in Revelations about Middle Eastern conflict, Persian involvement, armies of the evil (most likely merely breakers of that Commandment about no other gods, i.e., pagans, perhaps goddess worshippers) and of course Yahweh's holy army of vengeance against those who dare to seek other forms of deity.

Thus the pageantry of history unfolds.
